The Futility and Delusion of Scientology

Lately I’ve been watching the investigative series on Scientology produced by Leah Remini. As I watch the show, I want to scream out to the TV. The allure of Scientology is the idea that the world is broken and it needs to be fixed. My agreement with Scientology ends there.

According to Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, the idea is to empower people to fix their own problems.

…the aim and goal of Scientology is to take an individual or a group and by taking the individuals in the group, put them in a position where they can confront their own problems and solve their own problems and so bring themselves up by their own bootstraps.

The idea that you can solve your own brokenness is called “clearing” and the ultimate goal is to clear the planet. In their worldview, once the planet is cleared, there will be no more war, no more strife, and no more crime.

WHAT DOES “CLEAR THE PLANET” MEAN? It means that Scientologists want to rid the planet of insanity, war and crime, and in its place create a civilization in which sanity and peace exist. In order to do this, they must help individuals become free of their own individual aberrations and insanities and, hence, regain their inherent goodness.

The process by which a person becomes “clear” is called auditing and it’s a misguided version of confession with a redemptive goal. During the process of “auditing”, an “auditor” helps steer the person back to their natural state of goodness.

A fundamental precept of Scientology is that people are basically good, but have become aberrated through contact with the physical universe and therefore commit harmful acts. These acts reduce the person’s awareness and ability and recoil on them in a dwindling spiral of unhappiness and misery. Through Scientology, a person can confront his or her actions, take responsibility for them, and come to know and experience truth again.

At this point, perhaps a few of these things have struck a chord with you as well. When God created the world He declared that it was “good”. Not long afterward, creation would be placed under the curse so that now both spiritual and physical corruption reign in this world:

..No one is good except God alone.

Luke 18:19

…as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”

Romans 3:10 – 1

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

Romans 8:20 – 23

Scientology starts with a faulty premise–that the natural state of man is good. This is contrary to Scripture. No matter how much good a person does in this world, there is no one who measures up to God’s standard of perfection. Mankind can never fix his own brokenness. Rather, the cure for this world is Jesus the Christ.

When our Savior went to the cross, the debt for all of humanity was paid in full (1 John 2:2, 2 Peter 2:1). By simple faith in Christ and His finished work, He promises to erase our debt of guilt once and for all (Hebrews 10:10). In doing so, He assures us of a future that the futility of Scientology could never deliver.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.

Revelation 21:3 – 4

A special note: If you have left Scientology and are wresting with the brokenness of this world, please contact me. I would love to share the good news of Jesus with you.

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Matthew 11:28 – 30
